Filter Point Mattress

Foreshore Protection’s Filter Point Mattress is designed to relieve any hydrostatic uplift pressures through single weave ports sewn into the mattress. The Filter Point (F.P.) mattress is woven together at regular intervals to form Filter Points, which remain free of grout. These Filter Points allow water to permeate through the mattress to relieve hydrostatic pressures, while holding back even the finest soil particles. The inflated F.P. mattress has a dimpled finish and a Manning’s ‘n’ between 0.025 – 0.03 is suggested.

The Filter Point Mattress is ideally suited to the protection of bridge abutments, culverts, drains, and embankment stabilisation.

Collapsible Block Mattress

Foreshore Protection’s Collapsible Black Mattress is constructed of blocks separated by heavy duty fabric hinges. The hinges, which surround each block, allow the final structure to flex and rotate to account for any anticipated ground settlement. For this reason, it is imperative that the fabric maintains its structural integrity for the required service life. The Collapsible Block fabric is significantly stronger and heavier than our traditional fabrics for this very reason. It is also possible to further reinforce the mattress by placing polyester rope through each port connecting the blocks. This product is very effective for the protection of sea walls and spillways.

Uniform Cross Section Mattress

The Uniform Cross Section Mattress has no Filter Points, with the two layers of fabric being held together by diagonal restraining ties spaced at regular intervals. As a result it inflates to a constant thickness to act like a nominally, fibre-reinforced concrete slab, forming an impermeable lining.

This mattress has a much smoother finish giving a Manning’s ‘n’ of approximately 0.016. It is best suited to situations where a low Manning’s coefficient or impermeability is a requirement, commonly including structures such as dams, holding reservoirs, boat ramps and channels. It also allows for traffic from maintenance vehicles without any damage to the integrity of the system as well as preventing the flow of water without the need for an impermeable liner.

Growth Matt

Growth Matt is a product developed by our staff in Australia to meet the increasing demand for a natural and aesthetically appealing medium duty scour protection system.

Nature requires assistance to recover from engineering activity and the long-term effects of alterations to the original state. ‘Growth Matt’ has been developed to fulfil this important function.

The product works on the same principle of fabric form working as does our other products. In this case the finished mattress is basically a concrete lattice with areas of loosely woven fabric between the concrete tubes. Grass then grows through this large void, thus establishing a binding root system under the mat.

A loose grid of fine polyester fibres between the concrete filled tubes further achieves protection to the growth and the soil under the matt. These fibres are essentially an artificial root system/surface geotextile.

Applications
Low velocity floodways, diversion channels, perimeter drains, sand dune stabilisation, etc or anywhere where grass is required to grow but needs to be protected from vigorous action.

Preparation
Ground to be treated should be suitable for the establishment of an extensive root system and be evenly graded to falls.

Installation
Comprises the following sequence:

  1. Shallow perimeter depressions or trenches are usually required, approximately 300 mm deep.
  2. Seeded topsoil is then spread over the area to a depth of 100 mm. If the matt is to be placed over an existing grassed, area the preparation is minimal Growth will occur naturally when well watered, and the root system being able to establish itself in a stabilised environment.
  3. The mattress is tailored on site to suit the particular project, and is simply placed on the previously prepared ground and injected with the appropriate grout mix.
  4. ‘Growth Matt’ can be incorporated with any of our other products.

Generally

  1. Preparation of ground and seeded topsoil is not done by Foreshore Protection Pty Ltd unless special conditions exist.
  2. The selection of growth/seed should be to suit the local conditions and should not be a weed.
  3. Please contact this office for suggested native and mixed grass types to suit the local area.

Mattkote: Foreshore Protection Colouring System
This is a water based, rapid dry, adhesive stain (1 coating only required) specially designed and developed for application onto polyester based “Grout Matt” (in the presence of cement) and will not block the Filter Points, allowing full function of hydrostatic pressure release.

The composition of “Mattkote” is non-toxic and the bactericides are non-mercurials. Consequently, the leaching of rain/moisture over this coating would not be expected to cause any problems, providing the coating has fully cured.

Additionally, “Mattkote” contributes to the U.V. resistance values of the installed “Grout Matt”.

Surface Preparation
Allow the injected designed grout mix to cure for approximately 1 to 2 days. Ensure the “Grout Matt” is clear of loose debris. It is impractical to clear the surface completely.

Application
Stir well before application. Do not apply at temperatures less than 10 degrees. Apply one coat by airless spraygun. 1 litre of mattkote will normally cover 4 square metres of mattress.

Finish
Low gloss and available in a variety of colours including grass green, earth brown and ballast grey which can be tinted to suit the local conditions.

Unit cost for supply and application vary depending on the size and nature of the project. Contact us for a costing on your project.
